Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks. Simonides

Kris Knight

Kris Knight is a Canadian painter whose work examines performance in relation to the construction, portrayal and boundaries of sexual and asexual identities. Since graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2003, Knight’s practice has concentrated on thematic figurative works that are often as attractive as they are disturbing. His paintings allude to various expressions of duality, often dealing with opposing notions of hiding and fronting, ambiguity and androgyny, innocence and the erotic.

Knight’s artwork involves the creation of imaginary and biographical character-based narratives that attempt to find a balance between the dichotomies of pretty and menace, myth and reality. A portrait painter foremost, the characters that Knight paints are heavily influenced by grunge, vampires, zombies, fur trappers, forests and a sincere love for winter.

Depicting the intimate, but nonetheless foreboding nocturnal rural landscape as a background for his narratives, Knight’s often tense portraits of secretive and burned-out youths are sugared with bits of Canadiana that are representative of his upbringing.
